Clarence Richeson


Reverend Clarence Virgil Thompson Richeson was executed for the murder of his fiancee Avis Willard Linnell. Avis Linnell died on October 14, 1911 at the YWCA in Boston.

Richeson was born in Amherst, Virginia, the son of a tobacco farmer and his first wife of three. Richeson left home at age 13, moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, and worked at several jobs. Throughout much of his life he worked at a variety of jobs. Early on, he was ambitious and wanted to be a clergyman. He began to prepare for college at Amherst Academy. He has been variously described as a tall, handsome giant touched with mysticism.
